The Three Rounds

What you will actually be asked to do

01
Round 1

Live Code

Rebuild what you see.

A finished project runs in front of you the whole time — watch how it looks and behaves as you work, and rebuild it in Scratch yourself. A computer is set up for you.

Day 1 · 9.00am – 11.30am Computer provided
02
Round 2

Debugging

Find what is broken, and fix it.

You are given a Scratch project that is already written — and does not work. The bugs are yours to track down and repair until the project behaves the way it is supposed to. A computer is set up for you.

Day 1 · 1.30pm – 4.00pm Computer provided
03
Round 3

Presentation

Present the project you submitted.

Five minutes to present on your own laptop — a full demo of what you built, how it works, and how it answers SDG 11 — then three minutes of questions from the judges, who may also read through your code. You may bring notes of your key points; parents and teachers are not allowed to help during the presentation.

Day 2 · 9.00am – 11.30am Bring your own laptop

Rules on the Day

Four things worth knowing before you start

Rounds 1 and 2 are closed-book

No phones, no searching the web, no help from anyone. The invigilator will disqualify a finalist caught doing any of it.

Present the exact file you submitted

The project you demo must be the same version you entered in the preliminary round — the same file, with its core idea unchanged.

Be on time

Rounds start on schedule. If you arrive late, no extra time is given and no exception will be made.

The judges' decision is final

The judges' decision on scores and results is final.

Before You Go

Bring the signed form

Hand the original signed Student Health Declaration & Parent Consent Form in at registration. The scan you uploaded does not replace it — the organiser needs the copy with the signature on it.

Download the form

Online briefing, 18 September

A briefing for finalists is held online on Friday 18 September, 7.00pm to 8.00pm. The meeting link will be sent in the finalist WhatsApp group. Come with your questions — it is the last time to ask before the day itself.

Come with your parent or guardian

The parent or guardian who gave consent needs to be with you on both days.

Bring a laptop for Round 3

Round 3 runs on your own device. Bring your laptop, an extension cord, and your submitted .sb3 file on it. Rounds 1 and 2 use computers set up at the venue.

Dress Code

School uniform is the required attire on both days.

Common Questions

Do we need to be there on both days?

Yes. Two of the three rounds run on Saturday and the third on Sunday, followed by the closing ceremony. Missing a day means missing a scored round.

What time should we arrive?

Registration opens at 7.30am on both days.

Are Primary and Secondary judged against each other?

No. They are two separate competitions, each with its own judging and its own full set of prizes.

I have lost the consent form. Where do I get another?

Download it here — it needs a parent or guardian signature and is handed in as a hardcopy at registration.

Is there anything to pay?

No. Scratchathon is free to enter and there is no charge for the Grand Finale.

Something Not Clear?

If you have any questions, just ask in the finalist WhatsApp group.
